Job Title: Executive Director, Ashe County Chamber of Commerce


Status: Full-time
Salary: Salary depending on experience

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Ashe County Chamber of Commerce is seeking an Executive Director who can achieve board objectives; maintain and improve the chamber's financial stability, manage staff and membership and represent the chamber to various other organizations.

Essential Job Responsibilities

1. Event Coordination & Development
  • Coordinate use of the Ashe County Welcome Center and work to maximize revenue potential of the facility
  • Develop and execute projects and events that enhance the community and encourage trade, tourism and industry in Ashe County, North Carolina
  • Work with the Board Chair to staff committees and assist committee chairs with critical timelines; provide necessary and appropriate support; participate in all chamber-sponsored events
  • Coordinate all ribbon cuttings, open houses, Business After Hours, and other chamber events
  • Maintain and update files and records for each of the chamber's major events as well as other institutional knowledge
  • Develop publications, brochures, and promotional literature for the Chamber events

2. Administration & Finance
  • Lead and manage Chamber staff
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual budget and keep expenses within budgetary limits
  • Develop an understanding of the Chamber's accounting system, including the chart of accounts, budgets and basic accounting and budgetary principles.
  • Work with the chamber's accountant and treasurer to present all budget and financial reports at all board meetings
  • Provide agenda for monthly board meetings, including a monthly report to present to the Board of Directors on the activities of the Chamber
  • Work with the chamber's accountant and treasurer to present all budget and financial reports at all board meetings
  • Monitor member dues receivable and follow approved procedures to encourage payment of annual dues
  • Oversee the maintenance, repair and management of the chamber building
  • Work with the board to identify fund-raising opportunities or sources of Chamber funding

3. Membership
  • Communicate with existing and new businesses to increase membership, hear member concerns, and encourage active participation in chamber events
  • Establish a personal rapport with potential and current members through regular phone calls and visits and demonstrate commitment to providing exceptional customer service
  • Conduct periodic surveys of members regarding overall satisfaction with Chamber performance and report findings to the board
  • Maintain an updated list of current membership with necessary and current contact information
  • Work with printers and other individuals who may be contracted by the Chamber to assist in the production of the chamber's annual membership directory and other chamber publications, coordinating the production and accuracy of the publications.

4. Community Liaison/Outreach
  • Develop and maintain beneficial relationships with other organizations including the Towns of West Jefferson, Jefferson, Lansing and County of Ashe, other chambers, North Carolina Chamber of Commerce and other organizations as directed by the board
  • Schedule and/or attend meetings of various groups within the business community when such meetings may involve or affect the purpose and function of the Chamber or projects related to the chamber; report involvement/developments to the board
  • Attend conferences, seminars and other agency meetings approved by the board or executive committee
  • Develop a volunteer community

5. Public Relations & Marketing
  • Develop and implement public relations and marketing protocols for the Chamber
  • Oversee the gathering, writing, publishing and distribution of the weekly eNewsletter
  • Oversee the maintenance of the Chamber's website and community calendar
  • Seek opportunities to list chamber tourism and business events in calendars, appropriate publications and websites

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Flexibility during peak periods and ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Must be an excellent communicator
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles
  • Valid driver's license, good driving record and transportation required
  • Must live in Ashe County, North Carolina
  • Physical requirements include routine duties that may occasionally require lifting/moving up to 40 pounds.

Work Experience


The following skills/experience also are preferred:

  • Experience working with a board
  • Background in hospitality/tourism
  • Staff Management, with emphasis on the ability to motivate and empower staff
  • Grant Writing
  • Project Management
  • Event Coordination
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Professional Social Media Marketing
