AREA ATTRACTIONS
MT. JEFFERSON STATE PARK is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Offering a
panoramic view of the county, the park covers 541 acres. A number of hiking
trails dot the park and allow the naturalists an up-close look at the wide
variety of forest trees, shrubs and flowers. Early summer is particularly
beautiful with the profusion of flowering shrubbery, including purple
rhododendron and mountain laurel. A picnic area near the summit parking lot
provides good viewing of the park’s wildlife, which includes deer,
chipmunks, woodchucks, and, an occasional red or gray fox. 336-246-9653
NEW RIVER STATE PARK is named for the world’s second oldest river, the New
River, and offers ample canoeing opportunities. The New River is a gentle
river in its upper section which flows through Ashe County. Novice canoeists
should have little trouble navigating this section. The park offers three
accesses to the river, one of which is available only by canoe. Picnicking,
nature study, canoeing and camping available. Canoe rentals and delivery
services are available in the area at a moderate cost. 336-982-2587
