Bluff Mountain Nature
Preserve
Hike the Nature Conservancy’s Bluff Mountain Nature Preserve. Bluff is one
of the most ecologically significant sites in the southeast, as the
mountain’s unique geology, hydrology and ecology intertwine to create an
unusual mixture of habitats and wildlife. The mountain is distinguished by
over eleven natural communities that provide a fertile home for over four
hundred and fifty species of plants. Since the mid 1800s, naturalists have
explored this ancient landscape, cataloging its many unique natural
communities and species.
Bluff’s most celebrated natural feature is a twenty-five acre plateau on the
southeast side of the mountain. The plateau contains two extremely rare
natural communities: a glade area, often called the rock garden, that is
home to the rare reindeer lichen; and a southern Appalachian fen, a wetland
similar to a bog.
The hike is approximately two miles over rocky terrain of medium difficulty
and takes about four hours. Learn about this unique environment by arranging
a guided hike: by appointment only, at a cost of $10 per person. For more

Virginia Creeper Trail
The Virginia Creeper is a shared-use trail connecting Abingdon, Virginia,
with the Virginia – North Carolina border. The trail began as a Native
American footpath. Later, it was used by European pioneers, and was
eventually the site of the Virginia -Carolina railroad. It got its nickname
“Virginia Creeper” from the early steam locomotives as they slowly struggled
up the mountains.
With about 50 trestles and bridges, sharp curves and steep grades, the
Virginia Creeper was the quintessential mountain railroad. Crews faced
wash-outs, rock slides and other hazards, but it was economics that sounded
the line’s death whistle. Having failed to turn a profit since before the
Great Depression, the Creeper ran its last train on March 31, 1977.
From Abingdon to Damascus, the trail right-of-way belongs to the two towns,
but most of the actual land is private. While you do have the right to use
the trail across their property, please respect landowners. Stay on the
trail, close gates, keep dogs under control, don’t frighten the livestock,
and do be friendly! The trail between Damascus and the North Carolina border
is owned and administered by the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area,
however some sections go through private land and the corridor may be only
40’ – 100’ wide. PLEASE RESPECT PRIVATE LAND!
