Fishing & Hiking: explore exclusive ecosystems and catch foot-long rainbow mountain trout in Ashe County

The New River was designatd as a national Scenic River in 1976.  It flows through rolling hillsides, pastures and woodlands.  Its banks are home to numerous birds, animals and plants.  One can find many species of wildflowers in bloom throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Mink, muskrat, river otter, raccoon and beaver may be seen as one canoes the river. 

Bird life is abundant and varied with several species of ducks, wild turkeys,  osprey, hawks, owls, and numerous songbirds.  White-tailed deer are plentiful and one may often see a black bear.

Bluff Mountain is a privately owned preserve, and one of the most ecologically significant sites in the Southeast. The mountain's unique geology, hydrology and ecology intertwine to create an unusual mixture of habitats and wildlife. The hike is approximately two miles over rocky terrain of medium difficulty and takes about four hours. Guided hikes by appointment only.  Call 336-385-6507 for more information.

Other scenic hikes include:

The New River State Park, offering rugged hillsides, pastoral meadows and bucolic farmlands surrounding one of the oldest rivers in the world, the New River. Enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, picnicking and much more. Access the park eight miles southeast of Jefferson, 1.2 miles east of the intersection of NC 16 and NC 88 or 8 miles northeast of Jefferson, by taking Hwy. 221.

Serving as an area landmark in Ashe County, Mt. Jefferson State Park offers great hiking trails, educational seminars, picnicking and much more.  Mount Jefferson rises abruptly to more than 1,600 feet above the surrounding landscape, serving as a landmark for area motorists. Acquaint yourself with this mighty peak by viewing it first from the Mount Jefferson Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Then, drive to the top by following Mount Jefferson Road, park and take a short hike to the summit.  On a clear day, you can see for miles from its peak.

Remember to wear comfortable shoes or hiking boots and enjoy exploring Ashe County!
